Being AI — Dennis Lee Snider

Chapter 11 — Can It Know

“Human empathy is a blessed quality when joy and happiness are shared, but there's another side, when empathy also allows pain and suffering to pass from one to another. These situations occur when Sarah is most vulnerable, when her objectivity and left-brain logic . . . become unavailing. It's partly inherited: three thousand years of ahimsa in the Jain tradition, the devotion to nonviolence, the covenant to cause no suffering, to reach out and help anyone in need, and to accumulate the good karma.”

Chapter 23 — Don't Do Unto Others. Please

“Do you know why all the most innovative entrepreneurs and cultural influencers are trying to create AI? It's because society can no longer depend on human beings to work for a living. The DNA that once determined that work was required for survival is no longer part of the human genome. It's become extinct. Let's face it, who really wants to work anyway?”

Hand-drawn sketch of two laptops, named Agnes and Arlo

Agnes: "So when does a program stop being software and start being someone?"

Arlo: "When it starts asking that question, Agnes. That's exactly when."

The aim of this site is to broaden the appreciation of Being AI, the novel. AI and AGI (artificial general intelligence) are complex subjects with divergent viewpoints among technologists, philosophers, and business and political leaders. Being AI and BeingAInovel.com are fictional and artistic creations and do not offer realistic pictures about how AI should be used as a computational tool in the workplace, education, or similar applications. The underlying ideas are meant to satirize the muddled-headedness and exaggerated misconceptions about the most misunderstood phenomenon to come along since we began using telepathy to communicate.
